Site Inventory
Site Inventory
Knowing what inventory is already existing on the site can help predict opportunities and limitations for the design of sustainable and livable places. An assessment of existing inventory not only describes the site, but also analyzes its suitability for the site’s intended uses.
Some buildings on the Griffin Memorial Hospital area may be unsuitable for development due to varieties of limitations, including physical, biological, and cultural reasons. In addition, some parts of the Griffin Memorial Hospital area lack of accessibilities for elderly and impoverished people living in the community. Thereafter, I examined the existing building on the Griffin Memorial Hospital area as well as suggested road development pertaining to providing accessibilities for every individual and family living in the community.

Existing Building Conditions
The Griffin Memorial Hospital has 120 beds as well as 8 units building (labeled with red on the inventory map) that have been served for Norman citizens for several decades. It is old and has design flaws that contribute to times when both patients and staff are unsafe. In addition, it has inadequate storage spaces and nursing work areas. Therefore, staff would like to have the new building to feel welcoming to both patients and visitors who have their families in treatment. Furthermore, it is paramount to consider developing the tornado shelter infrastructure that is integrated with the new hospital building.

Furthermore, the following guidelines effectively represents the development of the hospital building that achieves project goals that address the primary requirement of the entrance area, the treatment area, and the administrative area.
Entrance:
-
The administrative entrance
-
It must be clear from the street and welcoming to all
-
-
The admissions entrance
-
It must be accessible 24 hours per day
-
It must be close to one of the dorms for easy access during the night
-
Requires the spaces for the visitors
-
-
The staff and visitors entrance
-
Requires a check in area and storage space
-
It needs to be flexible enough to accommodate recreational activities
-
Treatment Areas:
-
It needs a meeting space, kitchen area, and a secure medication room
-
All units need two shower rooms that have no ligature risk
-
All bedrooms need a sink and toilet that have no ligature risk
-
It requires an outside recreational space
-
It needs additional offices for clinical, staff bathrooms and custodial space
Administrative Areas:
-
It needs a full hospital kitchen
-
It needs a Medical Records area
-
It needs to be an accessible copy room/mail room adjacent to Medical Records
-
It needs an administrative area
-
It needs to have a staff break area
Existing Road Conditions
Providing safe, accessible and convenient bicycling and walking infrastructure is paramount to the multi-family development on the Griffin Memorial area, because bicycling and walking are often the optimal modes available to the multi-family residents.
The Griffin Area is serviced by a number of roads, most of which are shared use bike and pedestrian lanes that serving their neighborhood. For the most part, the existing conditions for pedestrian and bicycle lane on the Griffin Memorial Hospital area are generally acceptable. However, the existing road lacks of connection to northeast side of the Griffin area. There are also no bike sign on the road. In addition, the speed limit in the Griffin area is not safe for the cyclist and pedestrian. Therefore, cyclists do not feel safe or comfortable riding in the shared use road with traffic. Furthermore, cyclist and pedestrian also share the same lane. Cyclists riding with pedestrian create many opportunities for potential conflict with pedestrian.
Another main issue with the Griffin area is that the 12th AVE is not a pedestrian-friendly street by any means, because it has narrow sidewalks, lacks of traffic light, lacks of crosswalk, and has four wide lanes of traffic. Therefore, the redevelopment of the 12th AVE will make it to be friendly to all the road user.
In an effort to provide better bikeway and walkway that are integrated with nearby public transportation network, I will discuss the road redevelopment scenario in the Streetscape chapter.
