Streetscape

StreetScape

The 12th AVE streetscape plan presents transportation improvements for 12th AVE between the Robinson street and the Main street in Norman, Oklahoma. The plan is intended to provide a better walking environment, easier access to transit, and a better environment for developing multi-family housing. The 12th AVE is the area with retail shopping, personal services, and entertainment primarily serving the Griffin Memorial area and the nearby community. Therefore, people living in the Griffin Memorial area are able to combine multiple trips into one due to the close proximity of services.

Urban designers and transportation planners have been leading a charge for creating public streets that really are the multi-functional places that serve varieties of community needs and desires (MacDonald, 2011).  MacDonald (2011) concludes that drivers should be encouraged to go fast on a local shopping street, because a slower vehicle movement pace would be more comfortable for pedestrians and might make local commercial offerings more visible and accessible. In addition, there should be trees in the public street to give shade in summer and help clean the air and slow water run-off. Furthermore, walkers and bicyclists of all ages should be truly thought about and catered to, not only for equity reasons but also because of public health needs. Ultimately, the well-designed crosswalks at intersections should be provided in order to promote pedestrian safety and comfort.

Inspired by the MacDonald’s (2011) streetscape principle, I created the streetscape Plan Map for the 12th AVE between Robinson street and Main street in Norman, Oklahoma.

The Map represents the recommendations for the 12th AVE modification designs. The streetscape modification will include increasing the width of sidewalk along each side, improving the safety of the pedestrian and the cyclist in the intersection, and introducing trees into the median of driveway. I will interpret the modification in each study area.

Improvement

The crosswalk will be provided in the new intersection. It improves the safety pedestrian and cyclist by indicating to motorist that they can expect people in the area and should drive cautiously.

The expanded Sonoma Park Dr will include a bike lane, trees, benches, and green space, which connect to the 12th AVE in order to tie the neighborhood together. In addition, the new Sonoma Park Dr will act as an entry point for the Griffin area.
