Subdivision and Planned Unit Development Planning
Site Assessment:
The site planning requires a thorough understanding of the sites’ suitability for the intended use (LaGro, 2013). Hence, the site assessment is the paramount process of any site-planning project. In particular, prior to planning it is necessary for planners to collect variety of information, “including relevant legal, cultural, and biophysical factors” (LaGro, 2013).
In an effort to obtain the information, a substantial volume of online resources has been viewed. The first part of land that I visited was the hospital located in the southeast of the land. Studies indicate that, historically, this hospital was the significant landmark of Norman, because it was place to treat thousands of mental illness senior individuals who rejected by their families. However, today due to changing practices in mental health care, lack of funding, and shifting priorities, their patient capacity has reduced dramatically and stays are measured in weeks or days. Therefore, city of Norman purchased this property in order to seek opportunities to develop commercial district. The proponents believe that the vacant land development is an essential component to the economic vitality of Norman, because the new development can bring additional opportunities to the community. On the other hand, the opponents find news about that nearly in the last century, dozens of patients in the hospital died in fire and their bodies were buried in unmarked grave that near the hospital. Hence, the opponents believe that prior to conducting the development their families should be informed as well as their bodies should be excavated and deserve proper burial.
Historical Note
Opportunities And Constraints
Site suitability for the combination of land uses is a function of the Griffin Memorial Hospital’s assets and liabilities—or opportunities and constraints. Many physical, biological, and cultural factors can influence the Griffin Memorial Hospital’s suitability for the project under consideration (LaGro, 2013).
Inspired by LaGro, J.A. 2013. Site Analysis: Informing Context-Sensitive and Sustainable Site Planning and Design, I created the Site Assets Table for the Griffin Memorial Hospital.

The Griffin Memorial Hospital Area’s Intended Uses
Once a site is selected, its intended uses can be planned— or programmed— in more detail. In terms of variety of factors, I created the diagram to interpret the development goals and the outcomes pertaining to the scenarios. In particular, the diagram indicates that the intent of the Griffin Memorial Hospital development is to create a mix use residential community, which is complemented and supported by parks, business, and commercial infrastructures. In other words, the purpose of the Griffin Memorial Hospital development is to provide opportunities and possibilities to work, leisure, tourism, and shopping activities in close proximity to its vicinity. Therefore, the following chapters are going to provide a general overview of the framework for the planning of the Griffin Memorial Hospital community as well as analyze the variety of factors influencing the designs.
